The third series of popular American TV show Survivor is about to start - but the question of whether the public has the appetite for reality TV after the events of the last month is being asked.

The new series will pit 16 contestants against each other, surrounded by lions, tigers and elephants in a Kenyan national reserve.

The BBC's Tom Brook writes that since the US terror attacks, viewing figures for a broad swathe of US reality programmes "have declined".

TV executives are wondering how Survivor: Africa will fare. Will viewers now find the show's subject matter irrelevant and trivial? Or do people need escapism through TV programmes that are far removed from daily life?
