The band is nominated in categories for best single, best album, best live act, and best act in the world today. Click here to see the Q Award nominees in full. Close behind them are veteran Irish rockers U2 who are in the running for best album, best live act and best act in the world. The Sterephonics were Sir Richard Branson's V2 label's first signing some five years ago.
Their album JEEP has been a critical and sales success. Meanwhile superband U2, who have been recording for over two decades, are enjoying a multi-million selling album in All That You Can't Leave Behind. The monthly magazine's annual awards nominations features a wide mix of music genres. Stereophonics and U2 will compete with REM, Radiohead, Travis and Manic Street Preachers for the title of best act in the world. Travis won that award last year, while the Manics won it the year before. In the best new act category Mercury Prize nominees Turin Brakes, Goldfrapp and Tom McRae are in the running.
PJ Harvey is also in the running for best album with her Mercury Prize-winning record Strokes From The City, Stories From The Sea. Competition comes from Radiohead, with Amnesiac, Muse with Origin of Symmetry and Travis with The Invisible Band. Fatboy Slim, who swept the board at the MTV video awards, is in the running for best video with Weapon of Choice.
