| Monday, 1 October, 2001, 11:31 GMT 12:31 UK The pop princess and the pauper ![]() Lopez and Judd met almost eight months ago The news that Jennifer Lopez has married boyfriend Cris Judd will undoubtedly raise a few eyebrows in the showbiz community. Lopez is a professional screen siren and Latin music superstar whose dresses make as many headlines as her performances while Judd is, without being too harsh, just a dancer.
One only has to think of the recent split between Kate Winslet and Jim Threapleton to see the complications. But Lopez's previous partner was no stranger to the limelight. It is less than eight months since Lopez split up with Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs. Ditched The couple broke up during Comb's trial in court over gun charges after a fracas at a New York night club in December 1999. The timing of the split was hardly propitious and although Combs was later cleared on all charges, the suspicion that Lopez had ditched the singer because of the bad press surrounding the trial lingered in the air.
The couple met while Lopez was filming the video to her song, Love Don't Cost a Thing, in which, ironically, she sings of loving a man no matter what his status or wealth. Omens It would seem Lopez has lived up to the moral of the story in dating and now marrying a man with no fame and no money. But while she has enough celebrity and wealth for both of them the omens are not that good for their long-term prospects.
And while honeymooners are doubtless too busy to occupy themselves with thoughts of potential pitfalls in their new relationship other lessons should be heeded. Former Spice Girl Mel B married Jimmy Gulzar in a glitzy ceremony in September 1998 after they met when he was a dancer on the group's world tour. Odds The couple had a child, Phoenix-Chi, soon after but tabloid reports of dramatic bust-ups and rows were followed by a split and then a divorce. Mel B reflected her feelings about the marriage in last year's single Feels So Good, with the lyrics "All you loved was Mel B's money". But perhaps Lopez can ride the odds and make the marriage work. "I'm real", she sings in her latest release and perhaps her claims of being a normal person - albeit one who earns millions of dollars from her movies and singing - are true and her marriage will be unaffected by the pressures of fame. Lopez can also learn from experience - she has been married previously, to a model called Ojani Noa. But cynicism remains and it does seem odd that the best man at Lopez's wedding was not a long-time friend of Judd's, but rather the superstar's manager. But then love and work do mix with the couple - Judd recently choreographed a series of Lopez's concerts in Puerto Rico. And Hollywood is the fabled fairytale factory - perhaps this is one story with a happy ending. | See also: Top Showbiz stories now: Links to more Showbiz stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
