Sour end to Spanish film festival
Pilar Lopez de Ayala and Orlando Lubbert
Pilar Lopez de Ayala and Orlando Lubbert picked up awards
The announcement of the winner of the San Sebastian Film Festival was met with boos by critics who felt it was not worthy of the accolade.

A Cab for Three - Taxi para Tres - directed by Orlando Lubbert is the highest grossing film in Chile this year and was awarded the Golden Shell award for best film.

But it was not one of the favourites and the eventual declaration was met with astonishment and boos from the press and critics at the ceremony.

A number of stars withdrew from the film festival at the last minute in the wake of the attacks on the US, including Julie Andrews, Warren Beatty and Mira Sorvino.

Big names that did turn out included Harvey Keitel and Ewan McGregor, who was there to promote Moulin Rouge alongside director Baz Luhrmann.

Streeters - De la Calle - won the new directors' award for Gerardo Tort, who picked up a cheque for 25 million pesetas (92,800).

The 49th annual San Sebastian special prize was presented to Spanish director Jose Luis Guerin for his pseudo-documentary Work in Progress - En Construccion - about the building of a historic neighbourhood in Barcelona.

Frenchman Philippe Harel's Ghislain Lambert's Bicycle - Le velo de Ghislain Lambert - was voted best screenplay, while Roman Osin was awarded best photography for The Warrior.

The Silver Shell best actor's award went to Duzgun Ayhan for his role in Escape to Paradise, the story of a Kurdish family seeking political and economic asylum in Switzerland.

Spain's Pilar Lopez de Ayala won the Silver Shell for best actress for her performance as Queen Juana de Castilla in Madness in Love - Juana la Loca - shot by veteran director Vicente Aranda.

Beatty and Andrews were invited to the festival to collect the prestigious Donostia Award for lifetime achievement but pulled out because of the recent tragedies, believing it would be inappropriate to attend.
