Kiss Me Kate's Carolee Carmello joined in the rendition of New York, New York

Although the League of American Theatres and Producers announced that Les Miserables' takings rose from $94,500 (�64,000) to $167,000 (�113,000) it still played to less than a 30% audience capacity.

Lord Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera fared slightly better, with takings leaping from $185,400 (�125,700) to $273,600 (�185,400), with around a 35% capacity.

Survive

Better news came from Tony-winning musical The Producers which reported a sell-out audience at every one of its shows and receipts of $982,900 (�666,200).

Six productions, including Les Miserables and Phantom, have been making their own attempts to survive the downturn in the wake of the tragedies by taking a 25% pay cut for four weeks.

The Rocky Horror Show, which closed on Sunday, reported standing room only for its final performances after selling off half-price tickets in Times Square.

A production of Kiss Me Kate, which has seen a 50% pay cut across the board in an attempt to dodge closure, has seen a 55% capacity.

Big names

Two of the show's stars, Burke Moses and Carolee Carmello, were among the 100 celebrities who gathered for the recording of New York, New York.

Other big names singing on the track include Molly Ringwald, Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane.

A video for the song is to be shot in Times Square on Friday, featuring 500 costumed performers from all the shows.

It will form part of a new marketing campaign which will see adverts across print, radio and television, specifically targeting New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

The Producers' stars Lane and Broderick will appear in one radio ad while Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey will voice another.

A benefit show featuring theatre stars will also be held in October with all proceeds going to various causes including a fund for Battalion 9, Ladder 54 - the fire house in the theatre district that lost 15 members at the World Trade Center.
