Moulin Rouge blends historical romance with modern soundtrack

Musical extravaganza Moulin Rouge was knocked into second place after two weeks at the top, taking �1.5m in three days.

US romance Crazy/Beautiful, starring Kirsten Dunst, was the only other new entry to make it into the top 10 film chart.

The Fast and the Furious, which was a surprise hit in America earlier this year, continues to perform strongly in the UK, taking �1.3m and dropping just one place to number three.

A Knight's Tale has also slipped a place to number four, with box office receipts of �517,045, followed by horror spoof Scary Movie 2 taking �369,192.

British comedy The Martins, starring Kathy Burke and Lee Evans, is at number seven earning �209,539 in its second week.

Shrek, an animated tale about a green ogre, has moved up one place to number nine, 13 weeks after its release.

Bollywood movie Ajnabee took �59,986 in its opening weekend, despite only been shown on 17 screens, placing it at number 15 in the chart.
