 | | Wednesday, 19 September, 2001, 17:15 GMT 18:15 UK Madonna's art held up by flight chaos  Madonna's painting is a key work for the exhibition A painting due to be loaned by Madonna to the Tate Modern for an exhibition of surreal art, has been held up in the US. The flights chaos, after last week's terror attacks in the US, have meant the painting will not make the opening of the display on Thursday. Madonna had agreed to loan her painting - an important piece by Frida Kahlo - for the exhibition Surrealism: Desire Unbound. The work, entitled Self Portrait With Monkey, is among three pieces which have been affected by the crisis Surreal A further 18 works were held up after flights to and from the US were suspended, but they eventually arrived at the last minute. The exhibition is due to include 428 paintings and will be one of the largest surreal art exhibitions in the UK for 20 years.
"The Kahlo is a key work but Madonna's curator is making every effort to get it to us," said a spokeswoman for the Tate Modern. She said most of the paintings were from the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan in New York. Although crated and ready to go, the pieces were not considered to be high priority. "The good news for us is that 18 of the works are now here and we are confident the others will follow," she said. Works by greats such as Dali and Duchamp are among those which will be on show in the exhibition, which spans 13 rooms. Air problems Two drawings are still awaited for the opening of a Royal Academy of Arts show on Rembrandt's Woman. It is due to open on Saturday but works, from Chicago and New York are again caught up in air problems. "Even though there are a huge number of international loans, we have been fortunate that the majority of the works were already over here because the exhibition travelled down from Edinburgh," said a spokeswoman for the Royal Academy.
