Two recent British films have fallen out of the top 10.

Lucky Break, by The Full Monty director Peter Cattaneo, has dropped to number 12, and Steve Coogan's The Parole Officer has dropped to number 14.

Moulin Rouge's UK debut follows success in the US and Australia, despite a lukewarm critical reception at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.

The film opened in the UK on Friday after a royal premi�re on 3 September attended by Prince Charles.

Moulin Rouge, directed by Australian Baz Luhrmann, stars Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, and has a cameo appearance from Kidman's fellow Antipodean, pop singer Kylie Minogue.

It was shot almost entirely at the Fox Studios in Sydney.

In May it broke records in Australia, including the record for the box office take in a film's first day - held for 13 years by Paul Hogan's Crocodile Dundee II.

The film, which incorporates contemporary pop hits in a late 19th Century Parisian narrative, is the third part of Baz Luhrmann's Red Curtain trilogy - which includes Strictly Ballroom and William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

A song from the film soundtrack, Lady Marmalade, has been an international chart hit.

At the UK royal premi�re, Kidman commented: "It was so much fun. It was one of those films you make that you are seriously sad to finish.

"When will I ever get to do a musical again?"
