Music shines through at V2001
Nelly Furtado
Nelly Furtado got the crowds dancing
By the BBC's Debbie Cuthbertson at V2001 in Chelmsford

V2001 is a lot more sanitised than other festivals - they've tried to provide creature comforts but with this weather it's still a big mud puddle.

It also feels incredibly mainstream - usually at a music festival there are loads of alternative-looking people, but I haven't seen any here.

And No Logo author Naomi Klein would have a field day - Virgin has gone to town - its logo is everywhere.

There are huge screens with banners on and you can send a text message that will appear on the screen and be seen by everyone here. People have been sending messages galore.

But the music has been superb.

Nelly Furtado had the whole crowd standing and dancing, with a DJ on the decks on stage with her - she was really cool.

She wowed the crowd with I'm Like a Bird and did a couple of Missy Elliot numbers including Get Your Freak On.

Faithless were on the main stage and had everyone jumping when they played We Come One and I Can't Get No Sleep.

And Coldplay kept the crowd pumped up, playing all their hits plus some new songs.

One new tune sounded too similar to their other material - rather like Coldplay-by-numbers - but the other one was called Gonna Put a Smile on Your Face, which was much less melancholy than their usual fodder.

Kylie Minogue
Kylie Minogue: Amazing
Towards the end of their set the heavens opened and everyone raced to undercover venues.

But some people queued more than an hour in the rain to see Aussie sample masters Avalanches and, of course, Kylie Minogue.

Kylie was amazing, and I was surprised at how strong her voice was.

She opened with Shocked and also did Step Back in Time.

She also got a huge cheer for Kids, her hit song recorded with Robbie Williams.

Unfortunately I did not manage to see Texas or the Charlatans because I got drenched - it was bucketing down when they were playing, and I had to take refuge in a nearby tent.

Still - that's the joy of open air music festivals.
