| Friday, 17 August, 2001, 14:25 GMT 15:25 UK Anderson to revive Mastermind ![]() Anderson: Will present the new show from November Brain-teasing television quiz Mastermind is to make a comeback, with Clive Anderson taking Magnus Magnusson's place in the host's chair. The Discovery Channel will screen the show, which ran on the BBC for 25 years until 1995. The new version, which begins in November, will keep the old format but will also let digital viewers take part through their remote controls. Film star and producer Gary Oldman has also joined the channel to front a Saturday night documentary show. Mastermind was famed for its eerie theme tune and the spotlit black leather chair in which contestants sat while being asked a barrage of questions. The BBC show was also memorable for its catchphrase "I've started so I'll finish", which was frequently used by Magnusson when the buzzer went at the end of a round.
"I've always enjoyed watching it," said Anderson, who is best known for presenting Whose Line Is It Anyway? and Clive Anderson Talks Back. "I think it really welcomes the viewer by encouraging them to side with one of the contestants. "Of course there are always those who think they're the experts after answering one or two specialised questions. I think my own specialist subject would be the history of Arsenal FC." Four contestants take turns in answering questions on their specialist subject and general knowledge.
Oldman, who has starred in Hollywood films The Fifth Element and Air Force One, will present a documentary showcase called Filmreal. The announcements come as the channel unveils its autumn and winter schedule. "[The schedule] demonstrates that we're dedicated to challenging and stretching the boundaries of topical and factual television," said David Abraham, general manager of networks at Discovery Networks Europe. The channel will also screen special theme weekends, starting with a host of programmes to commemorate the death of Elvis Presley. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top TV and Radio stories now: Links to more TV and Radio stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
