Sir Arthur Conan Doyle drew inspiration from Dartmoor

The Hound of the Baskervilles was published in the Strand magazine in 1901, four years after the world-famous detective made his literary debut.

The dark tale sees Holmes investigate the mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville, who is discovered on the wild moorland, with canine footprints nearby.

The week-long convention will see members of the Baskerville Hounds study group travel from America, Canada, Germany and Japan to the town of Ashburton.

They are due to visit the High Moorlands visitor centre in Princetown, which was once the Rowe's Duchy Hotel where Conan Doyle stayed.

The members are also travelling to Plymouth, where the author worked as a doctor in 1882, and has featured in many of the 19 film versions of the tale.

Chairman of the group, Philip Weller, is also launching his new book, The Hound of the Baskervilles - Hunting the Dartmoor Legend.

Weller's new appreciation of the history and legends of Dartmoor includes full text of the original story as it first appeared in The Strand, as well as rare Victorian photographs.
