Dan Carol worked for the Clinton administration with partner Stuart Trevelyan. The Carol Trevelyan Strategy Group hopes to find a strong democratic candidate for the next presidential election in 2004 and Cusack is believed to be the man for the job.

Cusack's recent hit films include High Fidelity and Being John Malkovich.

Carol started the campaign on Junction City, a website which runs a number of campaigns for women's rights and such as Justice for Janitors and Save Our Environment.

'Cooler than Malkovich'

The site gives four reasons why Cusack should be president: "He made the tough decisions in Grosse Pointe Blank. He couldn't be bought in Eight Men Out. He's cooler than John Malkovich. And we like his politics so far."

People who log on to the website can send an e-card featuring Cusack which reads: "Cusack for Prez: He's looking for a dare to be great situation."

Readers can also register for regular e mail updates on the campaign to elect "a cool cat as the top dog."

"We figure that if Ronald Reagan can be president, and Warren Beatty thinks he can, then why not a guy like John Cusack?" Carol said, speaking to the LA Times.

"Our plan is to demonstrate a grassroots support and get to a point where he can't ignore it anymore," Carol added.

Cusack - currently starring in America's Sweethearts with Catherine Zeta Jones and Julia Roberts - was unavailable to comment on his status as a potential American leader. He "is on vacation and is not reachable," according to his publicist.

Having reached the age of 35, Cusack is eligible to enter the presidential race.

The website offers an alternative for those who aren't fond of Cusack's work in Say Anything, Con Air and Pushing Tin: "Well, we like his sister, Joan, a bunch. She's got the mettle to lead nations and the humility to not want the job."
