Driver, who is now based in the US, joked about her and McCormack's shoes: "We're tall birds anyway but you can never be tall enough."

High Heels and Low Lifes, which opens in the UK on Friday, is a comedy thriller with multiple twists and a sense of menace.

Driver and McCormack play two friends who overhear a mobile phone conversation about a bank raid - and then decide to blackmail the robbers.

The film's bad guys are played by Kevin McNally and, as a chilling godfather, Michael Gambon.

McCormack said it had been great fun working with Driver on the movie which was filmed in North London.

"It's nice to work with a friend, particularly when you're playing friends," she commented.

Wedding

Smith, whose previous films include Bean, said High Heels and Low Lifes was the best thing he had made to date.

"It's a comedy-thriller and there are a lot of laughs, but if you take the laughs out, I'd like to think there's still a lot there.

"For what it's worth I'm very proud of it. I'd say it was the film I'm happiest with so far."

Before disappearing into the West End cinema, Driver was pressed by journalists for details about her forthcoming wedding to actor Josh Brolin.

Driver said plans for the ceremony were progressing well but she was keeping tight-lipped about the event.

"Actually it's a big secret, I don't want you to know," she joked. "But we'll have a fantastic time."
