Actor and director Robert Redford has said US President George W Bush "doesn't have a clue" about environmental issues.

In an interview with the German weekly magazine Stern, he urged other nations to put pressure on the US at a global climate conference in Germany next week.

The film star and environmentalist said President Bush seemed to be unaware "we are all living in a global village".

"The United States is the biggest polluter but it acts as if it were alone in the world," he said.

Emissions

Redford said he thought the president was too dependent on advisers with industry and military backgrounds.

"They are blind and deaf to the changes of the past 40 years," he told the magazine.

UN talks on limiting emissions of "greenhouse gases" start in Bonn on 16 July.

Delegates will be discussing the future for a 1997 treaty signed in Kyoto, Japan, that has been rejected by the US.

Redford's films include Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, Out of Africa, Up Close and Personal and The Horse Whisperer.
