| Tuesday, 3 July, 2001, 15:18 GMT 16:18 UK 'Bootiful' dialect to be saved ![]() The dialect project will save Norfolk heritage The Norfolk dialect is to be preserved on tape for future generations. Money from the National Lottery will help record the Fenland speech, which gives us "moss could" for Morse code, and "cuckoo", a bedtime drink. The 4,000 grant will go to The Friends of Norfolk Dialect (FOND) to buy recording equipment. The group is looking for volunteers for recordings to build up an archive of the county's traditional words, sayings, stories and songs.
"It's a living organism and we are going to keep it alive," said FOND chairman Keith Skipper, who submitted the Lottery application. "It's going to be great fun and also something very worthwhile." People will be able to listen to the recordings, made by the group, which will be handed over to the Norfolk Record Office. Mr Skipper said the project will help to maintain an important part of Norfolk heritage. "We thought it would be nice to do something that isn't just a social bit of fun but we want to make a real contribution to future generations.
"Everybody tells us so much of the Norfolk dialect is disappearing and we wanted to do something practical as well as sociable and amusing. "One of our principal objectives was to preserve and promote the Norfolk dialect and we saw an archive system as an integral part of that." |
