Bidding for the home - owned by Kathy Burns of Solomon's Island, Maryland - opened at $85,000 (�59,996).

The top bid - submitted by somebody using the name Srueff - edged out the next highest by $100 (�70.58).

Burns bought the property, near downtown Duluth, Minnesota and with a view of Lake Superior, for $62,000 (�43,761) in October 1996.

She lived in Minneapolis at the time and once planned to live in the house or turn it into a museum.

The composer of such classic songs as Knockin' On Heavens Door, Times They Are A Changin' and Blowing in the Wind was born Robert Zimmerman in Minnesota in 1941.

He lived there until he was six years old.

A number of high profile tribute concerts and events took place across the world to celebrate his birthday.

His song Things Have Changed from the movie Wonder Boys won an Oscar this year and he topped a poll of BBC News Online users as the greatest lyricist of all time.

Since his first album, called Bob Dylan, was released in 1962 he has recorded more than 40 more.

He began his musical career as a folk artist but since then his music has generated a wide cross over appeal.

He still tours extensively, performing more than 100 times a year.
