Kelsey Grammer, who plays Seattle psychoanalyst Frasier Crane in the long-running sitcom Frasier, has become the highest-paid actor in TV history, according to a report in Variety.

The trade paper said on Friday that Grammer, 46, has agreed to stay with the hit NBC comedy for the 2002 and 2003 seasons for a record fee of more than $1.6m (1.1m) per episode.

In addition to starring, Grammer also serves as an executive producer and occasional director on the programme.

The paper also quoted insiders as saying that Paramount is finalizing a new long-term deal for Frasier co-star David Hyde Pierce, who plays Frasier's neurotic brother Niles.

The show, which will begins its ninth season this autumn, also stars John Mahoney, Jane Leeves and Peri Gilpin.

Variety said representatives for Paramount and Grammer had declined to discuss the deal further, so as to keep Grammer's salary details secret.

But the paper reported that altogether his two-year deal with the show's producer, Paramount Network Television, is worth about $75m (53m), although the details were still being finalized.

Grammer originated the Frasier Crane character in the bar room sitcom Cheers, and his other TV credits include the voice of the Sideshow Bob on The Simpsons.

He won the Emmy for best lead actor in a comedy in 1994, 1995 and 1998 for playing Crane.

Frasier itself won the Emmy for best comedy for five consecutive years, from 1994 to 98.
