| Saturday, 16 June, 2001, 18:35 GMT 19:35 UK Festival spirit at sodden Fleadh ![]() The rain did not appear to dampen the spirits of hundreds of fans Hundreds of music fans braved mud and rain to attend this year's London Fleadh in weather conditions more usually seen at the Glastonbury Festival. The 12th annual Irish Music festival at Finsbury Park in North London was hit by endless downpours throughout the day on Saturday. But the spirits of the hundreds of fans were not dampened as they flocked to undercover stages to see artists including veteran rocker Neil Young, Billy Bragg, the re-formed Waterboys, Lemonheads frontman Evan Dando and Teenage Fanclub.
Visitors to the festival went to great lengths to shelter from the unrelenting rain by donning makeshift raincoats made out of bin-bags. Many slithered along the mud as ground was churned up underfoot. The long-running Glastonbury Festival, which usually follows the Fleadh, has been renowned for suffering appalling weather, but this year the event has been cancelled. |
