| Monday, 11 June, 2001, 16:30 GMT 17:30 UK The Invisible Band: Your Views ![]() No longer the new Radiohead? Travis release their third album, The Invisible Band, on Monday. Disclaimer: The BBC will put up as many of your comments as possible but we cannot guarantee that all e-mails will be published. The BBC reserves the right to edit comments that are published."It is a round and shiny version of a spin-obsessed politician, an unadventurous film or a meaningless mobile phone ad - a victory of style over substance," said BBC News Online's Ian Youngs. But what do you think? Have Travis succumbed to a bland album backed up by 21st Century marketing strategies? Or are they still the new Radiohead? Middle of the road, run of the mill, feeble, feeble, feeble music that pollutes offices across the land. Well done Travis for sticking to your completely inconsequential, irrelevant, million-selling guns. An excellent album from the best post-Beatles band. All the songs are as captivating as the Man Who tracks and the use of the banjo on some of the tracks demonstrates the ingenuity of the band members. Definitely the indie-lovers bible. Dull, dull, dull, sentimental formulaic nonsense. Avoid! Travis never were the new Radiohead, and never will be. They've shown themselves to be capable of producing reasonable indie-pop in The Man Who, but this album just shows that there's only so far that a limited formula can go. It's as good as the last LP. In fact it is the same as the last LP. All the tracks sound the same. If you liked The Man Who you will love this.
I have never seen Travis as "the new Radiohead", they've never been as experimental with strange sounds. They excel at writing good guitar based pop songs, and The Invisible Band is the best yet. Dear Diary is one of those songs that you listen to with the lights off when you just want to clear your head and The Humpty Dumpty Love Song is like every persons' worst break-up written into a superb little tongue in cheek ditty! All in all, it's a belter of an album! A decent album with a few quite promising tracks, but when you judge it against albums one and two it fails the litmus test. The fine melodic song-crafters return, once again sharing bitter, authentic heartache, but with tunes sweet enough to brighten you up and bounce merrily around your head for weeks. There is nothing overtly original on this album, yet this is still one of the best album releases of the year so far. For now Travis do not have enough in their arsenal to turn into an international force - however, there are subtle hints that suggest one day they may indeed have a global impact. Their fans are quite happy not to have to share the band with the rest of the world anyway - this album is an unpolished gem, suggesting potential of tremendous riches. I'm afraid to say it sounds like most bands' third album - lacking the essentials which drove them to succeed in the first place. Complacency I think. Managed to get hold of a copy last week and like most albums, it takes a couple of listens but this one's great. No reason it cannot do as well or even better than the last. Safe is a great melody, Pipe Dreams bites my bullet!
Ineffectual easy listening dross. Possibly the dullest work by a UK artist since the Lighthouse Family exploded onto the pop scene. Travis the new Radiohead? That's like comparing Cliff Richard and The Shadows to The Doors! Bland and dull, both lyrically and musically, Travis are the kids who grew up too fast making music for the over 40s only. To be put on your dad's shelf along with Phil Collins, Sting, and Texas. Have Travis succumbed to a bland album backed up by 21st Century marketing strategies? Or are they still the new Radiohead? What's the difference? If this sells in the way The Man Who did, then there's nothing left to say about British music. This band are rubbish. There are not many bands around these days that have their own individual sound and creativity. Travis has this sound and I play their music in my band and the new album doesn't get any better, I love it! Travis are excellent on CD, and seeing them live shows that they enjoy their music. Radiohead have gone too off-track since OK Computer - Radiohead had it, and lost it... but still all the critics rush to praise Kid A and Amnesiac, whilst at the end of the day, it is Travis who can produce excellent tunes that appeal to all ages. Bland, boring, drags on ... nothing like the first album. They sound like they were rushed by the record company to finish this LP... and came out with a really unlayered sound. It's oh so very pleasant and nice. But isn't that what you say when you dump a girlfriend? Travis have been caught in the trap where you release exactly the same album twice. There is nothing on this album that wasn't on The Man Who except this album doesn't have great songs like Driftwood or Writing to Reach You. If Fran Healy wasn't such a nice bloke it would be easy to start disliking Travis. But everyone deserves a second chance.
Luis, Mexico Bland on bland. Is this the best album in the world ever? Is this a huge leap forward in terms of production and also songwriting? Should Radiohead be quaking in their boots at the sheer quality on offer here? Have I drank too much coffee and am beginning to witter too much? Is this album our generation's Pet Sounds? Nope.........it's rubbish. I prefer the deeply original and forward thinking (and soon to be world famous) Muse. No, they are not the new Radiohead. Much as I despise Radiohead's unprogressive rock, I don't deny their ability. Whereas Travis are the worst kind of whiney wannabees. Grown men singing trite little meaningless ditties for 13- year-old girls. Didn't James do all this once before? And at least they had the occasional catchy tune. Guff! I've had this CD for about a month now and it's going to go down as a classic. They've improved on the high standard of their previous album. This album reminds me of Rumours by Fleetwood Mac, no outstanding track that you can single out but as a whole package, outstanding.
Gareth Wilson, UK I think that Travis's new album is a wonderful blend of new and old. You hear a lot of influences from the other albums but it still retains a new edge. All in all, I think it's a great addition to a wonderful selection of records released by Travis. Well what can I say? Here is a band who's last album set hearts a flutter the world over with its songs of beauty and yearning. Third albums are always difficult. What's the new one like? Is it an OK Computer or a Be Here Now? It's a real disappointment! The songs are the same as the last album, only inferior. But it's the words that are worst. I mean, has Fran been reading the little book of clichs? I cringe at most songs. Oh well......at least The Strokes have a new "Iggy Pop" tribute album coming out soon. Rock RIP. New Radiohead? Actually no, Travis are the kind of band to make you sing out loud and smile - not rest your head on the nearest surface and contemplate suicide like Radiohead. Travis are fantastic in their own right - stop comparing them to other bands that are completely different. Top band, love the song.......and that's that! They are wicked. keep it up boys. |
