Private Eye editor Hislop presented awards

Smith's debut novel - which she started writing at 21 - has become a major hit for a literary novel and a television adaptation for Channel 4 is currently in development.

White Teeth has also won the Guardian First Book Award, The Whitbread First Novel Award, The James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction, the WH Smith Award for New Talent and the Commonwealth Writers' First Book Award.

Betty Trask Prize for a first novel by an author under 35:
Zadie Smith for White Teeth, with further awards to Justin Hill, Maggie O'Farrell, Vivien Kelly, Monsin Hamid and Patrick Neate.

Cholmondeley Awards for Poets:
Ian Duhig, Paul Durcan, Kathleen Jamie and Grace Nichols.

Eric Gregory Awards for poets under the age of 30:
Leontia Flynn, Thomas Warner, Tishani Doshi, Patrick Mackie, Kathryn Gray and Sally Read.

The McKitterick Prize for a first novel by a writer over 40:
Giles Waterfield for The Long Afternoon.

Sagittarius Prize for a first novel by a writer over 60:
Michael Richardson for The Pig Bin.

Somerset Maugham Awards to enable young writers fund foreign travel:
Edward Platt for Leadville and Ben Rice for Pobby And Dingan.

Tom-Gallon Award for a short story:
Paul Blaney for Apple Tennis.

Richard Imison Memorial Award for original radio drama:
Murray Gold for Electricity.

Travelling scholarships were also awarded to authors Alan Judd, Christina Koning and poets Tessa Ransford and Maurice Riordan.
