| Wednesday, 6 June, 2001, 11:28 GMT 12:28 UK Radio station fined for playing Eminem ![]() Eminem performed Slim Shady at the MTV Awards 2000 A Colorado Springs radio station is facing a $7,000 (5,000) fine for broadcasting an "indecent" version of rap singer Eminem's The Real Slim Shady. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) made the complaint to the station KKMG on 1 June after a complaint from a listener - in July 2000. The FCC said last week that the version of the record played by KKMG "contains unmistakable offensive sexual references". KKMG operations manager Bobby Irwin said the record had already been edited by Eminem's record company and was not indecent, but the station has stopped broadcasting it. Edited KKMG has 30 days to respond to the FCC complaint, but so far the station has not paid the fine and is considering what to do. The edited version of The Real Slim Shady played by the station was provided by Eminem's label Interscope Records.
"Virtually every pop, Top 40 station played that song," said Cat Collins, the programme director for Denver's KQKS-FM. "That was a number one record - the kind of record that stations played 65 to 70 times a week." The FCC said that the station played a version of the Eminem song that was indecent and still had some expletives, as well as innuendoes about violent misogyny and graphic sex. The lyrics contain references intended to pander and shock, the FCC said, and violated a ban on airing patently offensive material from 0600 to 2200, when children were most likely to be listening. Managing director Darren Hele said that vehicles were picking up the offending CDs containing The Real Slim Shady from 300 Wimpy outlets after parents complained. The CDs were given away with a special Wimpy food pack offer for children under 12. |
