Comedy actress Ellen DeGeneres is returning to television, three years after her sitcom Ellen was axed.

US network CBS has confirmed Ellen Again will be part of this year's autumn schedule.

The new series revolves around DeGeneres as a successful gay businesswoman who returns to her Midwestern hometown expecting a hero's welcome.

In a comic-tragic twist of fate, she learns upon arrival that her dot.com empire has gone belly-up.

Her mother will be played by veteran comic actress Cloris Leachman.

Normal

Industry pundits have commented upon the similarities between DeGeneres' new show, and Normal, Ohio on the Fox network, which stars John Goodman as a heavy-drinking, sports fanatic Midwesterner who leaves Los Angeles to return to his Ohio home. The character also happens to be gay.

CBS has now made a six-episode commitment to Ellen Again, which is reported to be lined up for a Friday night slot.

DeGeneres' comeback was originally planned as a variety show, or a satire in the vein of The Larry Sanders Show.

Award

According to CBS Television president Leslie Moonves, DeGeneres "felt more comfortable with a sitcom".

He said, "She just came in and said, 'Gee, I'd rather try this.'"

DeGeneres has enjoyed moderate success outside of television.

She was nominated for an Outfest Screen Idol Award on 14 May by the Outfest Lesbian and Gay film Festival for her role in If These Walls Could Talk 2, an TV special looking at lesbian life across the years.

She has also gone back on the road as a stand-up comedian, recently completing a 36-city tour.

Her personal life has been less successful. In August 2000, she split up with her partner of three and a half years, Anne Heche.
