Oscar-winner Roberts stars in The Mexican

It has earned �25m in the US and Canada, but has been pushed out of the number one slot in the box office there by Sylvester Stallone's Driven.

The Mexican, which pairs Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts, is a new entry in the chart at number two with ticket sales of �1.1m.

Pitt plays a mobster who must recover an antique pistol called "the Mexican", while Roberts stars as his girlfriend.

The reviews have been mixed but most are in agreement that The Sopranos star James Gandolfini steals the show.

Family adventure Spy Kids, starring Antonio Banderas, slid from two to three with sales of �837,000.

The second new entry in the chart is Exit Wounds, an action drama with Steven Seagal.

Seagal plays a tough cop in an inner-city precinct who discovers a web of dirty cops and corruption

Helping Seagal's character to find the truth is crime boss Latrell Walker.

The film opened at number four with sales of �510,000.

Rounding out the top five was the British-produced teen thriller The Hole, which has remained stable in that position.
