The film also won best supporting actress, best action choreography, best sound design, best cinematography, best original film score and best original song.

"This award is for everyone," said Lee.

"This is a Hong Kong movie in the strictest sense, even though it doesn't look very much like it."

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon took four Academy Awards last month for best foreign language film, best art direction, best cinematography and best original score.

The film contains dazzling fight scenes

The Mandarin-language film starring Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh combines old-fashioned storytelling with gravity-defying fight scenes.

It is the first foreign-language film to make more than $100m (�69.9m) at the US box office.

Another big winner at the film awards was In the Mood for Love which took five prizes, including best actor (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) and actress (Maggie Cheung Man-yuk).

Leung won best actor at the Cannes Film Festival for the same role.

Shot mainly in the hallways of a Hong Kong apartment block, In the Mood for Love is a tale of romance and infidelity set in the 1960s.

Hong Kong's film industry is beginning to recover after years of struggle.

Although the territory's film industry enjoyed success in the 1980s, it declined in the 1990s and actors and technical talent moved overseas.

Last year saw a sharp upturn in its fortunes as 160 films were produced.
