| Monday, 30 April, 2001, 08:48 GMT 09:48 UK Stallone drives Bridget off top spot ![]() Driven: Stallone was reunited with Cliffhanger director British blockbuster Bridget Jones's Diary has been shunted off the top of the North American box office chart by Sylvester Stallone's new vehicle, Driven. Stallone wrote and stars in the story of a washed-up racing driver who helps his young protg get his season back on track.
Driven was directed by Renny Harlin, who made Stallone's last big hit, 1993's Cliffhanger. It also stars Burt Reynolds as team owner Carl Henry, with Kip Pardue as the rookie driver. Bridget Jones - which stars Hugh Grant and Renee Zellweger and was adapted from Helen Fielding's best-selling book - had been the top film in North America last week.
But a new comedy starring Warren Beatty, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton, Town and Country, could do no better than enter the top 10 at number seven. The film cost $90m (63m) to make, but took just $3m (2m) in its first weekend, and looks set to become one of the biggest flops in film history. Its release was reportedly put back 13 times, and its British director, Peter Chesholm, described it as "a mess". It also stars Andie MacDowell and Charlton Heston - but it has been roundly panned by American critics. Spy Kids was third in the box office chart, and has now taken more than $93m (65m) in ticket receipts. Along Came A Spider, Morgan Freeman's new thriller, dropped to fourth, with Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles in fifth place. |
