Based on Helen Fielding's popular book, Bridget Jones jumped three places in the US chart after it opened on 600 more screens than in the previous week.

The film has also benefited from repeat visits, according to Mark Gill, president of Miramax's Los Angeles operations, the film's distributors.

Driving factor

Women were the driving factor, taking friends on one weekend and husbands or boyfriends the next, he said.

The film is now on course to repeat the success of Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral, two of the most successful British comedies ever made.

Spy Kids slips to number two in the box office

Elsewhere in the chart, Paul Hogan's third Crocodile Dundee film opened in fourth place, taking $8m (�5.5m).

Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles opened throughout North America on Friday and reportedly cost about $25m (�17.3m) to produce.

The first two films took more than �120m at the US box office.

Tom Green's film Freddy Got Fingered opened at number five, with $7.3 (�5m) million in takings.

Green, husband of actress Drew Barrymore, starred in and directed the film, which suffered because of an R rating, meaning adults have to accompany teenagers to the film.

The film appeals many to teenage boys, according to marketing research.

Robert Rodriguez's film Spy Kids and the Morgan Freeman thriller Along Came A Spider remained at number two and three in the chart respectively.
