| Wednesday, 18 April, 2001, 08:36 GMT 09:36 UK National's Nunn to leave ![]() Trevor Nunn will have served for five years Royal National Theatre director Trevor Nunn is to step down from his post when his five year term ends in September 2002. The board of the theatre, on the South Bank in London, is now looking for a successor to the 61-year-old, previously known for blockbuster productions including Cats and Les Miserables. A spokeswoman said Mr Nunn had enhanced the reputation of the theatre and "upheld the standards established by his predecessors, Laurence Olivier, Peter Hall and Richard Eyre". She added that Nunn had "his own plans for the next stage in his career" and he had told the board he is not seeking reappointment.
The spokeswoman said the position would not be "formally" advertised. Mr Nunn, who earns just under 120,000 a year from his post, has been at the centre of controversy over his revival of My Fair Lady, which stars former EastEnders actress Martine McCutcheon. It was suggested he would benefit financially when the 2.5m production, of which he is director, moves from the National to the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in July. But Mr Nunn insisted that any royalties he did receive as My Fair Lady's producer would be divided between himself and the publicly subsidised theatre, so that the National received a greater share. "I have been determined from the outset that whatever happens in such royalty negotiations, the result must be to the advantage of the National Theatre," he said last month. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Arts stories now: Links to more Arts stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
