 | | Monday, 9 April, 2001, 18:45 GMT 19:45 UK Pavarotti marking anniversary online  Pavarotti: Made his opera debut on 29 April 1961 Opera star Luciano Pavarotti will mark the 40th anniversary of his stage debut with a performance to be broadcast on the internet later this month. The show, from the Modena Opera House, northern Italy, will launch his new website. He also announced that he will only continue singing for another "couple of years". "I have done well during these 40 years and I'd like to continue at the same level for another couple of years, but then I'll turn to teaching," he said.
He started his career in Reggio Emilia, Italy, on April 29, 1961 as Rodolfo in Puccini's La Boheme. The Modena concert takes place on April 29 will be broadcast on the internet the following day. He will be hoping to top the 15 million people who recently logged on to try to watch the first public performance in years of Italian pop legend Mina, 61. Due to high demand, only 250,000 were able to actually see her. Pavarotti is no stranger to big crowds - even if they have not usually been via the internet. In 1993, he played to more than 500,000 fans in Central Park, New York, and has sung before 300,000 in Paris and 150,000 in London.
