Mel Brooks has adapted his film

It stars Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane in a farcical tale of the lengths a failed stage producer will go to to get a hit show.

In an interview with Time magazine, Brooks expressed his delight at his show's immediate Broadway success.

"I have not been this happy since I did my first sketch on [television's] Your Show of Shows with Sid Caesar," said Brooks.

"I am back doing what I was born to do. And I love it."

Brooks is acting as producer to his musical stage version of The Producers.

His movie starred Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel as producers who oversell the worst play ever written - Springtime for Hitler - in order to escape with the profits.

Brooks told Time how, for years, people had been trying to coax him into making The Producers into a stage musical.

But he resisted until DreamWorks executive David Geffen approached him in 1998.

"He was a pit bullterrier," said Brooks.

"He was on my pants cuff, and I could not shake him."

But Brooks also admitted to having long dreamt of writing a Broadway score.

The Producers' star Matthew Broderick said Brooks had been very involved in the show's daily production process and rehearsals.

"He's totally attentive, watching like a hawk," said Broderick.

He also recounted that Brooks arrived at one rehearsal yelling: "No, no, you are ruining my masterpiece!"

The show has come to Broadway after a successful try-out period in Chicago.
