| Friday, 6 April, 2001, 12:40 GMT 13:40 UK UK Love Parade heads north ![]() Thousands gathered for the Leeds Love Parade 2000 A quarter of a million clubbers are set to line the streets of Newcastle as the city plays host to the 2001 Love Parade. The BBC Radio 1 event has moved from its inaugural home of Leeds to Newcastle for this year's summer festival. DJs and superclubs will help create one of the country's largest free parties emulating the extravaganza started in Berlin. A parade will roll through the streets of Newcastle on 21 July with floats sponsored by the clubs and dance music organisations.
The music will run across the weekend with live shows going out on Radio 1 throughout the event. Ethos Radio 1 executive producer Matt Priest said: "Newcastle is the perfect location for Love Parade UK. "The exciting development of 2001 is the introduction of a real parade making sure we keep as close as we can to the ethos of the original Berlin Love Parade." City councillor Ged Bell said: "There are still a lot of details to be finalised. "However, we will be working closely with everyone involved in the organisation of this event to ensure they are resolved as speedily as possible." The Leeds Love Parade in 2000 saw up to 400,000 descend on Roundhay Park but it was not without its problems. At one point it looked like it may have to be cancelled but the go ahead was eventually given three days before it opened. Emergency services were stretched to the limit as 1,200 were treated by St John Ambulance and paramedics at the site and 450 others treated at the local hospitals for drink and drugs-related ailments. |
