| Wednesday, 21 March, 2001, 15:41 GMT Teletubbies to get fit ![]() The Teletubbies want to put the bounce into viewers The Teletubbies might be rather less tubby in future, with the release of their own keep fit video for toddlers. Tinky Winky, Dipsy, La La and Po will appear in the Teletubbies Go! Video later this year which will encourage basic skills like jumping, stretching, marching and even standing on one leg. The move follows criticism from Australia that the rotund Teletubbies are encouraging children to associate being fat with being cheerful. But the BBC has rejected the criticisms. Mark Johnstone of BBC Worldwide, which markets the show, said: "The series has always been about movement, physical development and exploration. "Teletubbies love to dance, jump, stretch, roll around and run - children watch them and join in." Child obesity News of the video release comes the day after the first Teletubbies Get Up and Go! First Annual Exercise Day in the United States.
Child obesity is a major problem in the United States, where one out of every 4 children in the US is overweight. At a national nutrition forum in Australia earlier this week, a speaker criticised "overweight" television characters including the Teletubbies. Dr Gavin Frost told the conference: "There is no doubt that characters such as the Teletubbies are cute and endearing, but the question is whether these unfortunately named characters are helping to entrench poor messages that being fat and jolly are attributes to aspire to." |
