Bryson's love affair with Britain

Home isn't where the heart is for Bryson
Globetrotting author Bill Bryson is planning a return to the UK after decamping back to his native America.

Bryson quit the country several years ago to give his children a different perspective on the world, but has revealed he still pines for the UK.

While his children and his British wife Cynthia have settled well in the US, Bryson thinks it was a mistake to go back.

The writer penned Notes From a Small Island about his experiences of living and travelling around the UK, observing the peculiarities of British culture.

He has also written books about America and Australia.

Bryson said he and his wife have yet to decide on a place to settle.

He favours a countryside retreat like Wiltshire or Dorset, while Cynthia would prefer to live nearer London.

Bryson told Radio Times: "I wanted to come back the day after we returned to the States. I thought it was a serious mistake.

"Every time I return I notice a buzz. Britain has caught up with America in terms of quality and convenience of life, and has gone a thousand times beyond.

"I even admire things that don't work well, like the railways or the NHS."
