| Tuesday, 6 March, 2001, 17:48 GMT Hannibal chomps Chocolat ![]() Juliette Binoche in the Oscar-nominated Choclat The Oscar-nominated film Chocolat has failed to shift Hannibal from the top of the UK box office charts. The serial killer movie held off competition from the Juliette Binoche movie, as well as Keanu Reeves' film The Gift and the Meg Ryan and the Russell Crowe-vehicle, Proof of Life.
Chocolat took �929,000 in its first three days of release, less than half of that taken by Hannibal in the same period. Novel Based on a novel by Joanne Harris, Chocolat has been nominated for a best film Oscar, while stars Juliette Binoche and Dame Jude Dench are up for best actress and best supporting actress respectively. Supernatural thriller The Gift took �900,000 in its first three days, while Proof of Life took �762,000. Taylor Hackford, the director of Proof of Life, recently blamed the real life romance of Russell Crowe and Meg Ryan on the film's poor performance at the US box office. Robert Redford's latest film, The Legend of Bagger Vance, failed to break into the top 10, despite the appearance of stars Matt Damon, Will Smith and Charlize Theron.
