Billy Zane invited Liz Hurley to his party

The incident is said to have happened at the Sunset Room in Los Angeles on Saturday night.

Miss Hurley was at the party to celebrate the 35th birthday of actor Billy Zane.

Hurley was attacked as she walked towards the VIP room in the club, said the newspaper.

'Fled'

A woman is said to have screamed at her and shouted, "You murdering bitch", before throwing wine at the actress.

The New York Post reported Miss Hurley "fled" from the scene after the incident.

Last year the actress was fine �70,000 by a US acting union for filming an advert during a strike.

The 35-year-old star had the fine imposed by the trial board of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) for breaking a five-month strike by appearing in a perfume advertisement for Est�e Lauder.

Ms Hurley had said she was unaware of the strike because she was based in the UK and the union had not informed her of the industrial action.

Liz Hurley has re-established herself as a celebrity in her own right since her split with actor boyfriend Hugh Grant.

She has a number of films awaiting release, including Servicing Sara, a comedy alongside Friends' star Matthew Perry.

Her last film, Bedazzled, performed poorly at the box office, both in the UK and US.
