Recent reports suggested that Weaver, 51, would be paid $22m to reprise her role as Ellen Ripley in the cult horror sci-fi movie.

The actress told US TV show Access Hollywood that she had not even spoken to anyone about the possibility.

"I was interested to read that I was doing a fifth film for a phenomenal amount of money.

"Unfortunately, it wasn't true. At least the sum. And I haven't really talked to Fox about making another."

She added that while it was very likely a script for a fifth Alien was "lying around at Fox somewhere', she had not been approached by the film company.

Weaver has starred in numerous big movies such as Working Girl and Gorillas in the Mist.

But she is best-known for the four Alien movies and her role as the steel-jawed space crusader Ellen Ripley.

A-list

British director Ridley Scott - latterly applauded for Gladiator and Hannibal - saw Weaver working off-Broadway and felt she would perfect for the part.

The character of Ellen Ripley developed by Weaver was intelligent, resourceful, strong and courageous.
