Travolta leads Raspberries race
John Travolta
John Travolta played a giant alien in Battlefield Earth
John Travolta's sci-fi flop Battlefield Earth has won eight nominations for the Razzies - the flip-side to the Oscars.

The film's nominations include worst picture and worst actor for Travolta, while his wife Kelly Preston was tipped for worst actress and Roger Christian for worst director.

Rhys Ifans
Bedevilled: Rhys Ifans in Little Nicky
Close behind with five nods each came Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, Little Nicky, starring Adam Sandler and Rhys Ifans, and The Next Best Thing, which starred Madonna.

The Razzies - also known as the Golden Raspberries - take place in Los Angeles on 24 March - the eve of the Academy Awards.

Battlefield Earth, which bombed at the US and UK box office last summer, was voted for by 93.5% of the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation's 503 members.

Island adventure

The $73m (50m) movie took just $22m (15m) at the US box office.

Members consist of critics, filmgoers and people who work in the entertainment business.

Sylvester Stallone

Travolta was also nominated for worst actor for Lucky Numbers.

He is in competition with Leonardo DiCaprio who is nominated for island adventure The Beach.

Adam Sandler was nominated for Satanic comedy Little Nicky and Arnold Schwarzenegger was given a nod for high action sci-fi thriller the Sixth Day.

Fellow screen tough man Sylvester Stallone was also nominated for Get Carter 2000 - a remake of the Sir Michael Caine British classic.

Record Razzies

In the worst actress category, Cecil B Demented star Melanie Griffith will compete with Kim Basinger's double nod for Bless the Child and I Dreamed of Africa.

Demi Moore has been voted in to the same category for Passion of Mind, as has comedienne Bette Midler for Isn't She Great.

Showgirls from 1995 holds the record of the most Razzie nominations with 13 nods, before the categories were reduced to nine.

This year the Golden Raspberry Foundation has dispensed with a formal ceremony to present its trophies - gold-painted, golf-ball sized plastic raspberries on top of a film canister.

"I don't think this year's pictures are worthy of a ceremony," commented foundation founder John Wilson.
