| Friday, 9 February, 2001, 13:11 GMT Puffy driver 'changed gun story' ![]() Mr Combs is charged with bribery and gun possession The man who drove Sean "Puffy" Combs away from a nightclub shooting told a police officer that a gun found in it was his, then changed his mind, a court has heard. Rap impresario Mr Combs, 31, also known as Puff Daddy, is charged with gun possession and bribery following the December 1999 shooting at a New York nightclub in which three people were injured. He is accused alongside protg Jamal "Shyne" Barrow, 21, who is charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting three people, while bodyguard Anthony "Wolf" Jones is also charged with gun possession and bribery. All three deny the charges. Police Officer William Meyer told the Manhattan courtroom he was doing the paper work on the arrest of Mr Combs and others who had been in the sports utility vehicle when driver Wardell Fenderson told him he had something to say. "I asked him what was going on, and he said the gun was his," Mr Meyer said. But as Mr Fenderson was about to be fingerprinted, he withdrew his claim, the officer said. "He told me that the gun was not his and he was not going to take the rap for anybody else."
Mr Fenderson, who was not charged, is expected to give evidence for the prosecution that Mr Combs offered him $50,000 to claim the gun was his. Also on Thursday, a police sergeant told the court he did not see a gun thrown from Mr Combs' vehicle as it fled the scene. Prosecutors say a gun found near the scene was thrown from the vehicle. Sgt Jack Konstantinidis followed the vehicle for 11 blocks and forced it to stop. Under questioning from Mr Combs' lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, he also said the vehicle's windows were closed when he stopped it. The case continues. |
