Stars from India's movie industry are cutting an album to raise funds for the victims of the Gujarat earthquake.

Key Bollywood figures announced the launch of Jeevan Jyot (Light of Life) - a new fundraising organisation, which will organise the recording and other events.

The earthquake struck on 26 January killing more than 30,000 people.

Actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha said: "All possible avenues will be exploited to generate funds which would go to relief and rescue operations."

Indipop singer Phalguni Phatak, who is from Gujarat, will sing on the album, along with one of India's leading singers, Asha Bhonsle.

The album will also be called Jeevan Jyot, and will feature popular Bollywood songs.

Stars like newly-wed superstar actor Hrithik Roshan, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan will be joined by former Miss World Aishwarya Rai and actress Rani Mukherjee in a fund-raising show.

These are the latest showbusiness initiatives in wide-ranging efforts to aid victims of the quake.

Last week Star TV announced a special celebrity episode of a special celebrity episode of its game show, Kaun Banega Crorepati? - India's version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? - to raise funds.

Movie actress Madhuri Dixit and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar will appear in that show, scheduled for broadcast on Saturday.

Their winnings will go to disaster relief.
