| Tuesday, 6 February, 2001, 14:07 GMT UK loves What Women Want ![]() Mel Gibson in feminine mode Mel Gibson's foray into romantic comedy has ousted Tom Hanks' desert island drama Cast Away from the top of the UK box office. What Women Want, in which Gibson plays a sexist Chicago executive who develops the ability to hear women's internal musings, made �3.4m over its launch weekend, 2-4 February.
It could have gone either way, but the success of the film looks set to give this Hollywood star even more currency at the box office. Meanwhile Hanks' Cast Away portrayal of a modern-day Robinson Crusoe marooned on a remote island after an air crash has made �11.3m so far in the UK. The film saw Hanks reunited with Robert Zemeckis, who directed the 1994 hit Forrest Gump, for the film, which is now in its fourth week of release. Oscar-tipped Pushed back into third place is Steven Soderbergh's Oscar-tipped drug-war tale Traffic, starring Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones. The drama has taken �3m since its release. In fourth place is mountain-climbing saga Vertical Limit, starring Chris O'Donnell.
It was just behind Traffic making �752,403 last weekend and a total of �5m since its opening. O'Donnell stars as a young climber who has to rescue his sister and her summit team from treacherous conditions on K-2, the world's second-highest peak. And Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon continues its powerful box office run, maintaining its number five position making �521,465 last weekend, bringing its takings since UK release up to �4.62m. Ang Lee's martial arts drama tells the story of two women whose fates are intertwined with a subplot of undeclared love. Meet the Parents, the comedy starring Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller is still going strong. Their portrayal of the antics between father and potential son-in-law, are still proving poular seven weeks after the film's release. It has so far taken �14.7m and made �420,010 between 2 and 4 February. Children's hits 102 Dalmatians and The Grinch are still pulling in crowds. But Pay It Forward - starring top-league actors Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt and HaleyJoel Osment - and Unbreakable from The Sixth Sense director M Night Shyamalan have dropped to eighth and 10th places respectively. |
