| Wednesday, 17 January, 2001, 11:55 GMT Square victory in ratings battle ![]() The drama over Sonia's baby has had fans hooked EastEnders beat Coronation Street in 2000's battle of the soaps to become the most-viewed programme of 2000. Teenager Sonia Jackson's confrontation with her baby's father, Martin Fowler, drew in 20.89 million viewers to the 28 December edition of the drama.
The figures include ratings for EastEnders' omnibus edition as well as repeat showings of Coronation Street in some ITV regions. Out of the top 10 - which includes two of England's Euro 2000 football matches from the summer - seven programmes are from ITV and three from BBC One. Peter Lee's 500,000 win on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? secured the ITV hit's 19 January episode third place in the chart with 15.88 million viewers. Period drama Heartbeat came fourth, with 15.16 million viewers, in the survey, compiled by the impartial Broadcasters' Audience Research Bureau. England's short-lived stay in Euro 2000 saw games against Portugal (ITV - 14.94m) and Romania (BBC One - 14.56m) at fifth and sixth.
ITV's figures are not recorded in the chart, which only covers the 43 shows which took over 10m viewers - explaining the absence of Channel 4's Big Brother, which attracted just under that figure on its final night in September. Other sporting hits were ITV's David Beckham Story (34th, 10.54m) and Manchester United's World Club Championship game with Necaxa (39th, 10.17m). Two long-running shows went out with high ratings in November - Inspector Morse came eighth with13.66m, while One Foot In The Grave took 12.84m in the middle of a fierce ratings battle. Top film of the year was The Full Monty on ITV, which took 11.08m, coming 20th in the chart. |
