 | | Friday, 12 January, 2001, 09:42 GMT Breakfast over for Denise and Johnny  Vaughan and Van Outen say goodbye to viewers Big Breakfast presenters Denise Van Outen and Johnny Vaughan bid farewell to the Channel 4 show on Friday morning in typical boisterous fashion. With backing from pop star Elvis Costello, the two presenters said their goodbyes to viewers and fans who had descended on the TV studio in London. Vaughan and Van Outen are being replaced by a panel of five presenters from 22 January, in an effort to relaunch the ailing programme. The programme has seen viewing figures of 1.2m ebb to around 500,000 in recent months. Van Outen left the show in 1999 but was persuaded to return to the show in an ill-fated attempt to boost audience numbers. Vaughan has spent three years as the early morning presenter and has won a number of fans with his quick wit and laid back approach.
For most of the presenters, including former Radio Breakfast Show host Zoe Ball, the show has proved a launch to further media success. In the final show there were clips of Van Outen and Vaughan's original screen tests including a perplexed-looking veteran presenter Gaby Roslin coping with supremely relaxed novice Vaughan. He is planning to move on to other projects, including a sitcom he is writing called 'Orrible. Van Outen was shown in a helicopter on her Big Breakfast debut. The new Channel 4 breakfast line-up is comedian Paul Tonkinson, Irish TV presenter Amanda Bryam, current co-presenter Donna Air, former Blue Peter presenter Richard Bacon and former Big Breakfast presenter Melanie Sykes.
