| Tuesday, 9 January, 2001, 18:59 GMT Jackson sets Oxford date ![]() Child welfare campaigner: Michael Jackson Pop superstar Michael Jackson is to speak at the Oxford Union on 6 March to launch his new children's foundation. The 42-year-old singer will address the union with his new mentor, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, on the subject of child welfare. A statement from the foundation, Heal The Kids, says it aims to "take action on child welfare issues at both global and local levels". Jackson is chairman of the foundation, which is "devoted to promoting nurturing relationships between parents and children and to fostering programmes that help all children gain the love, attention and quality time they need to prosper and flourish".
Mr Boteach, who is president of the foundation, said: "Most parents today want to distinguish themselves in the boardroom rather than the living room. "They want to be knights of the round table rather than heroes to their kids at the dinner table. "It is critical that we shift our priorities to make our children number one in our lives." Jackson is close friends with the rabbi and Mr Boteach has described Jackson's commitment to children as "incredibly inspiring". His long-awaited new album is reported to be out in the late spring or summer of this year. Jackson will join a long list of celebrities who have addressed the Oxford Union, including Jerry Hall, Jerry Springer and Stella McCartney. Last year singer Barry White and actor Charlton Heston addressed the union. |
