| Monday, 18 December, 2000, 09:05 GMT Gibson grabs US top spot ![]() Mel Gibson as you've never seen him before Hollywood superstar Mel Gibson has finally ousted The Grinch from the number one slot at the US box office. Gibson's latest film, What Women Want, co-starring Helen Hunt, took $34.4m, according to Los Angeles-based Exhibitor Relations. He plays a sexist Chicago advertising executive, who after a freak accident develops the ability to hear women's uncensored internal thoughts.
However The Grinch, which topped the US box office for four weeks, has now taken an estimated $212.9m dollars since it came out five weeks ago. Last weekend's new releases did not do well, with mountaineering thriller Vertical Limit falling three places to number five and hostage drama Proof of Life down three to number six.
Gibson's romantic comedy shows the actor in a new light when he dons women's tights, waxes his legs and dances. His efforts result in his character, the flirtatious Nick Marshall, being transformed into the ultimate sensitive male. It is also a gift that gives him the power to steal the creative ideas that lie within the mind of his new boss, Darcy Maguire, played by Helen Hunt. |
