Britney Spears was one of the celebrity faces at the VH1 awards

British artist Sting won the award for Legend in Action, while Robbie Williams was voted the Best UK Act and Irish group The Corrs were picked as the Best-Kept Secret.

VH1 turned the whole voting process over to internet-friendly viewers, allowing them to choose the categories, nominees and winners.

The network claimed almost five million votes were cast for the winners, who picked up their awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Creed, who have been hugely successful in the US charts for more than a year, won four prizes - Song of the Year, for Higher, Welcome to the Big Time, Group of the Year and 2 for 2, reflecting the success of the group's second album, Human Clay.

Singer Scott Stapp said: "We love our fans so much, and they're so good to us.

"We feel like we give so much, and they give us back tenfold, and we couldn't ask for anything more."

The Chili Peppers won awards for Pushing the Envelope and Must-Have Album, for Californication, while Bon Jovi walked off with the award for Best Video.

Carlos Santana was voted Man of the Year

Other award categories included Best Booty Shake, won by Ricky Martin, Your Song Kicked Ass But Was Played Too Damn Much, won by Carlos Santana for Smooth, and You Want Fries With That Album?, which went to Faith Hill for her appearances in Pepsi adverts.

Performers at the event included U2, Bon Jovi, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, No Doubt, Creed, Christina Aguilera and Metallica.

Grammy-award winning Carlos Santana was voted Man of the Year, while Faith Hill, who was not present, took the Woman of the Year award.
