| Friday, 10 November, 2000, 00:42 GMT Abbey Road meets the superhighway ![]() Lennon and...Lennon: Kaleidoscopic web effects The Beatles have stepped into cyberspace for the first time, with the launch of a 2m official website. The launch of the new site on Monday, 30 years after the group split up, will coincide with the release of the their greatest hits package called 1.
The three remaining members of the Fab Four - Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison - are all said to have had an input into the site along with John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono. The site is based around the 27 tracks on the album - each of which has been a chart-topper in either the UK or US. Yesterday and tomorrow Anthony Couchi of record company EMI, project manager for the site, said: "We've had to find something for everyone. "There are the younger fans who expect games and interactivity and the older ones who may be interested in the stories behind the songs and looking at the single covers."
In the Yellow Submarine area, fans can play a Space Invaders-style game firing at the Blue Meanies which featured in the Beatles cartoon movie. For the I Feel Fine section, a Paris-based company has come up with a new video for the song animation using monochrome images taken from stills. The I Wanna Hold Your Hand section allows web surfers to see the famous Studio 2 of Abbey Road as The Beatles themselves would have seen it. By clicking on Ringo, for example, they can see the view he had from his drum stool. Fans can also test their Beatles trivia knowledge in the Eleanor Rigby section and check out archive material in the Paperback Writer section. Beatles' touch Mr Couchi said the band themselves had a hands-on involvement in the project. He said: "Paul McCartney suggested we needed more audio in the background for the I Wanna Hold Your Hand section which we took from his Liverpool sound collage.
The team have been working on the site for about eight months. Clever graphics are found all over the site - such as kaleidoscopic views of the band and 3D animations mixed with stills and live footage. |
