An England World Cup footballer is to go on trial accused of using a mobile phone while driving.

Jermain Defoe, 27, of Cuffley, Hertfordshire, denies using a BlackBerry while driving a Range Rover in Loughton, Essex, last October.

A district judge in Chelmsford said Mr Defoe would stand trial before magistrates in Witham on 26 August.

Mr Defoe scored a winning goal against Slovenia on Wednesday to earn England a last-16 tie against Germany on Sunday.

The England and Tottenham Hotspur striker was not in court for the case management hearing that heard his name had been misspelt on a court list.

He was charged after being stopped by a police officer on October 2.

Austin Stoton, acting for Mr Defoe, told District Judge David Cooper the footballer was a "man of very firm conviction" and was entering a "firm not guilty plea".
