Jeroen van der Veer, the CEO of Shell, has been talking about the difficulties of running an oil giant when prices are unpredictable.
He told the BBC's Tanya Beckett that Shell had started with a strong balance sheet, and that the key to surviving the recession was finding prudent ways to invest for the future.
