| Sunday, 15 October, 2000, 22:31 GMT 23:31 UK Billionaire brothers bid for Express ![]() The Hinduja brothers want to expand their media interests Two billionaire brothers have announced they are making a bid to take over the Daily and Sunday Express, and the Daily Star. Srichand and Gopichand Hinduja, who control the London-based Hinduja Group, were expected to make a formal offer in the region of 100m to the board of United News & Media (UN&M) on Monday. The offer would come through the conglomerate's wholly owned UK subsidiary, Amas UK. Worth 1.3bn, the British brothers are the eighth wealthiest people in the UK, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.
It went on to announce an intention to "appoint a respected board of trustees to guarantee the editorial independence of the newspapers and to encourage a genuine campaigning spirit on issues that matter to the British people and that improve the quality of life for everyone". 'Invaluable addition' The group - which also has interests in the banking, oil, infrastructure and chemicals industries - said Express Newspapers would be an invaluable addition to its growing international media and communications interests. "The Hinduja Group has been looking for some time to acquire a print media group," said the statement. "On hearing that Express Newspapers might be available, the group recognised that this is precisely the kind of business that it required. "The group believes that with the appropriate structuring, good management, a strong editorial team and an injection of cash, Express Newspapers can once again become an excellent business investment as part of the group's media communications business." A UN&M spokesman declined to comment. |
