Yvette Cooper on the increasing UK unemployment figures

There has been another rise in the jobless total. Unemployment increased by 21,000 in the three months to October, reaching 2.49 million, the highest figure since early 1995.

The number of people claiming jobseeker's allowance fell by just over 6,000 last month to 1.63 million.

The Work and Pensions Secretary, Yvette Cooper, admitted that unemployment was rising but defended the government's approach.
