Ford makes almost $1bn in profit

US carmaker Ford has announced profits of almost $1bn for the period from July to September, after cutting costs and increasing its market share.

While it has survived without a government bail-out - unlike rivals General Motors and Chrysler - the company has had to cut thousands of jobs and close factories.
